How do blood pressure monitors work?
A device is cuffed around your arm at a height roughly level to your heart. When activated, the cuff inflates, briefly cutting off the blood flow to your arm before relaxing again. During that process, the monitor records two measurements: systolic and diastolic pressure. Systolic pressure occurs when your heart beats and pumps blood through the arteries, while diastolic pressure is measured when your heart is resting and filling with blood. Both are recorded to make an accurate measurement of your blood pressure.
