Altitude Sickness
Altitude sickness You can get altitude sickness if you travel to a high altitude too quickly.Breathing becomes difficult because you’re not able to take in as much oxygen.Altitude sickness, also called acute mountain sickness (AMS), can become a medical emergency if ignored.Your age, sex or physical fitness do not affect your likelihood of getting altitude sickness. Also, just because you may not have had it before, this does not mean you will not get it on another trip. Anti Malaria
Malaria is a serious tropical disease spread by mosquitoes. If it isn’t diagnosed and treated promptly, it can be fatal. A single mosquito bite is all it takes for someone to become infected. Symptoms of malaria It’s important to be aware of the symptoms of malaria if you’re travelling to areas where there’s a high risk of the disease. Symptoms include: 1. A high temperature of 38C or above 2. Feeling hot and shivery 3. Headaches 4. Vomiting 5. Muscle pains 6. When to seek medical attention Seek medical help immediately if you develop symptoms of malaria during or after a visit to an area where the disease is found. You should still seek medical help even if it’s several weeks, months or a year after you return from travelling. If there’s a possibility you have malaria, a blood test will be carried out to confirm whether or not you’re infected. You should receive the results of your blood test on the same day. If you have malaria, treatment will…

Asthma is a common lung condition that causes occasional breathing difficulties. Blood Pressure
High blood pressure (hypertension) High blood pressure, or hypertension, rarely has noticeable symptoms. But if untreated, it increases your risk of serious problems such as heart attacks and strokes. Around a third of adults in the UK have high blood pressure, although many will not realise it. The only way to find out if your blood pressure is high is to have your blood pressure checked. Information: Coronavirus advice British Heart Foundation: what coronavirus means for you if you have heart or circulatory disease Blood Pressure UK: what does coronavirus mean for people with high blood pressure? What is high blood pressure? Blood pressure is recorded with 2 numbers. The systolic pressure (higher number) is the force at which your heart pumps blood around your body. The diastolic pressure (lower number) is the resistance to the blood flow in the blood vessels. They’re both measured in millimetres of mercury (mmHg). As a general guide: high blood pressure is considered to be 140/90mmHg or higher (or 150/90mmHg or higher if you’re over the age of 80) ideal blood pressure is usually considered to be between 90/60mmHg and 120/80mmHg Blood pressure readings between 120/80mmHg and 140/90mmHg could mean you’re at risk of developing high blood pressure…

Cystitis
Cystitis is inflammation of the bladder, usually caused by a bladder infection. It’s a common type of urinary tract infection (UTI), particularly in women, and is usually more of a nuisance than a cause for serious concern. Mild cases will often get better by themselves within a few days. But some people experience episodes of cystitis frequently and may need regular or long-term treatment. There’s also a chance that cystitis could lead to a more serious kidney infection in some cases, so it’s important to seek medical advice if your symptoms do not improve. Dental Problems
Fluoride Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral found in water in varying amounts, depending on where in the UK you live.It can help prevent tooth decay, which is why it’s added to many brands of toothpaste and, in some areas, to the water supply through a process called fluoridation. Tooth decay Tooth decay, also known as dental decay or dental caries, is a major health concern worldwide and is still a big problem in the UK. Despite being preventable, it’s one of the most common reasons for hospital admission in children. Tooth decay is the destruction of tooth tissue caused by acids made by bacteria in dental plaque. Dental plaque is a sticky film that constantly forms on the teeth. Each time you have sugary food and drink, the bacteria in plaque produce acid that attacks teeth. If you eat or drink sugary foods frequently throughout the day, you have more “acid attacks”, which can lead to tooth decay. This can eventually lead to cavities (holes) in the teeth and infection, which is why teeth sometimes need to be removed. Read more about the causes of tooth decay. Fluoride toothpaste Brushing your teeth thoroughly with fluoride toothpaste is one of the…

Pain Relief
The type of medicines that you need to treat your pain depend on what type of pain you have. For pain associated with inflammation, such as back pain or headaches, paracetamol and anti-inflammatory painkillers work best. If the pain is caused by sensitive or damaged nerves, as is the case with shingles or sciatica, it’s usually treated with tablets that change the way the central nervous system works. The aim of taking medication is to improve your quality of life. All painkillers have potential side effects, so you need to weigh up the advantages of taking them against the disadvantages. Paracetamol Paracetamol is used to treat headaches and most non-nerve pains. Two 500mg tablets of paracetamol up to 4 times a day is a safe dose for adults (never take more than 8 tablets in a 24-hour period). Overdosing on paracetamol can cause serious side effects, however, so do not be tempted to increase the dose if your pain is severe. If the pain lasts for more than 3 days, see your GP. The first 21 pills are active pills and the next 7 pills are inactive or dummy pills, when you have your period. Period Pain
Period pain is common and a normal part of your menstrual cycle. Most women get it at some point in their lives. It’s usually felt as painful muscle cramps in the tummy, which can spread to the back and thighs. The pain sometimes comes in intense spasms, while at other times it may be dull but more constant. It may also vary with each period. Some periods may cause little or no discomfort, while others may be more painful. Sometimes you may get pelvic pain even when you do not have your period. What causes period pain? Period pain happens when the muscular wall of the womb tightens (contracts). Mild contractions continually occur in your womb, but they’re usually so mild that most women cannot feel them. During your period, the wall of the womb starts to contract more vigorously to help the womb lining shed as part of your period. When the wall of the womb contracts, it compresses the blood vessels lining your womb. This temporarily cuts off the blood supply – and oxygen supply – to your womb. Without oxygen, the tissues in your womb release chemicals that trigger pain. While your body is releasing these pain-triggering…

Occasional episodes of premature ejaculation are common and are not a cause for concern. However, if you’re finding that around half of your attempts at sex result in premature ejaculation, it might help to get treatment. Causes of premature ejaculation Various psychological and physical factors can cause a man to suddenly experience premature ejaculation. Travellers' Diarrhoea
Introduction Travellers’ diarrhoea is spread mainly through food and water, but also from person to person and is one of the commonest health problems experienced during travel. Recommendations for Travellers Prevention depends mainly upon practising good hand hygiene and effective food and water precautions. Hands should be washed thoroughly with soap and water before eating or handling food, and always after using the toilet. Sanitising alcohol hand gel is an alternative when washing facilities are not available. Diarrhoea may occur even in travellers who stick strictly to food and water precautions; in many destinations the risk is determined by local food hygiene and sanitation practices. Additional preventive measures may be considered in specific situations, see below. Additional Preventive Measures Tablets to prevent diarrhoea are not routinely recommended as their side effects may be worse than the diarrhoea. Widespread use of antibiotics also causes drug resistance to develop in bacteria and this is an increasing global problem. However preventative antibiotics might be offered in selected circumstances, for example: Pre-existing bowel problems such as inflammatory bowel disease, or severe medical problems, such as diabetes, where an attack of diarrhoea/dehydration could seriously aggravate symptoms or cause relapse. Non-antibiotic Prophylaxis Bismuth subsalicylate An effective, non-antibiotic…

Weight Loss
The term obese describes a person who’s very overweight, with a lot of body fat. It’s a common problem in the UK that’s estimated to affect around 1 in every 4 adults and around 1 in every 5 children aged 10 to 11. How to tell if you’re obese The most widely used method to check if you’re a healthy weight is body mass index (BMI). BMI is a measure of whether you’re a healthy weight for your height. You can use the NHS BMI healthy weight calculator to work out your score. For most adults, a BMI of: * 18.5 to 24.9 means you’re a healthy weight * 25 to 29.9 means you’re overweight * 30 to 39.9 means you’re obese * 40 or above means you’re severely obese BMI is not used to diagnose obesity because people who are very muscular can have a high BMI without much fat. But for most people, BMI is a useful indication of whether they’re a healthy weight. A better measure of excess fat is waist size, which can be used as an additional measure in people who are overweight (with a BMI of 25 to 29.9) or moderately obese (with a…
